Price discrimination: The practice of offering identical or similar goods to different buyers at different prices when the cost to produce the goods is the same.

Not all price discrimination is illegal – it may be allowed in cases where sellers are attempting to compensate for varying costs of doing business with different buyers. Price differentiation is often a necessary business tactic to secure diverse buyers and encourage business transaction efficiency.  However, when price discrimination is used as a predatory pricing tactic designed to cripple competition at the supplier level, consumers and competing businesses may have an antitrust claim.

Small businesses threatened by chain store competition or wholesalers attempting to prevent large chain stores from buying directly from manufacturers at lower prices are situations where price discrimination may occur.
